Padmini (Mini) Murthy is a physician (a trained obstetrician and gynecologist) and an activist who did her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has practiced medicine and public health for the past 28 years in various countries. Murthy is the NGO Representative of Medical Women International Association to the United Nations. She has served as a consultant to the United Nations and is on faculty at New York Medical College as Director of Global Health and Associate Professor; currently Murthy also serves as member of the Executive Council of the NGO CSW Committee of NY at the United Nations. In this role she has met United Nations Ambassadors, high level UN personnel to discuss women’s health challenges. Murthy has been appointed to 3 consecutive terms as the Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights of the American Public Health Association (APHA), which is one of the largest professional organizations of health care professionals (physicians and public health professionals in the world). Starting in November 2012 she began her term as member of Governing Council representing the International Health section at the APHA. In August 2013 she was the 1st American woman physician to receive the Jhirad Oration Award (in Seoul, Korea) conferred at an international conference in recognition of her service and work to MWIA. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Sojourner Truth Pin which is given to those women who excel in community service. Murthy was awarded the National Council of Women USA Distinguished Leadership award on occasion of 100 years of International Women’s day in 2011. She was named best physician at work place by the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. In April 2015 Murthy was inducted as inaugural fellow of the American Medical Women’s Association. In June 2015 she received “Millennium Milestone Maker Awardee,” at the 9th Annual Women’s Symposium at Sias University China. Murthy is the author and editor of Women's Global Health and Human Rights (Jones and Bartlett publisher) which is used as a text book worldwide and she serves as a peer reviewer for several publications. She has a Master's in Public Health and a Masters in Management from New York University (NYU). Murthy has been on the Dean's list at NYU Steinhart School of Education and named Public service scholar at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School at New York University. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist.
