On October 15, 2024, the SID-US Digital Development Workgroup held a virtual planning meeting to discuss priority topics and upcoming programming. Below are the key takeaways from the discussion.

A group of 8 participants engaged in a lively discussion focused on the intersection of digital transformation, human rights, and technology, with insights into emerging trends in AI, machine learning, and data governance. The event featured a mix of presentations, participant contributions, and discussion around the group's survey results, which highlighted key areas of interest for future events.

Key topics covered included:

1. AI, Machine Learning, and Automation

Survey results indicated that 83% of participants selected AI and automation as a top area of focus, with a particular interest in generative AI and multimodal AI. The group delved into how these technologies can reshape digital transformation and broader digitalization efforts.

2. Human Rights and Technology

A significant portion of the discussion centered on the intersection of human rights and technology, which 50% of attendees identified as a key area of interest. This topic included conversations about data transparency, consent in data exchange, and ethical concerns around the use of technology for surveillance and digital IDs.

3. Sector-Specific Applications

Attendees explored how digital development trends intersect with various sectors. One participant, Colin C., shared insights on combining programming with education, particularly in digitizing education marketing. Participants also highlighted the role of digital transformation in public health, while others raised critical issues about human rights frameworks and the challenges faced by refugee communities regarding identity and rights protection.

4. Data Governance

Participants discussed the importance of data governance in ensuring ethical digital practices. Some participants shared perspectives on farmer-centric data governance and its impact on development initiatives.

The group also debated whether future programming should include two distinct events—one focusing on practical, hands-on approaches and another on technical or theoretical aspects of digital development and human rights.

Events like this meeting create a valuable space for practitioners to exchange knowledge and discuss the latest trends shaping digital development. The insights and feedback from this meeting will help shape future SID-US Digital Development Workgroup events, ensuring that they align with the evolving needs and interests of the community.
