Mei Li is Director at Johnson & Johnson’s Global Community Impact (GCI), the department that oversees Johnson & Johnson’s social impact and Corporate Foundation’s initiatives worldwide. Mei joined GCI in 2005, has held various responsibilities across GCI’s portfolio in supporting and championing people who are on the frontlines of delivering care for women and children.
Mei has represented JNJ in several multi-sectorial partnerships including Survive & Thrive Global Development Alliance led by USAID, Born On Time – a public private partnership with the government of Canada, World Vision, Plan International Canada, and Save the Children to prevent preterm birth in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Mali.
Mei co-led several initiatives on Safe Birth that is part of the Company’s Commitment to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Examples of such initiatives include:
- Saving newborn lives in Malawi and Uganda: A 5-year partnership with Save the Children. Through this partnership, over 1,000 health care providers working in 288 facilities were trained; over 23,000 babies were successfully resuscitated. The national HMIS in Uganda now includes indicators that relate to newborn health.
- China’s newborn resuscitation program: A 15-year partnership with the Chinese Ministry of Health, and American Academy of Pediatrics. Through this partnership, over 250,000 healthcare providers from 90% of labor and delivery facilities are trained, over 70% reduction in birth asphyxia related newborn death at the time of delivery, and policy changes around task shifting, newborn practices, licensing in obstetric services.
Prior to this role, Mei led the development of Johnson & Johnson’s strategic giving priorities in Women and Children at Risk of Violence and Abuse which resulted in the first partnership that empowers communities to abandon the practice of child marriage and female genital cutting.
Mei has over 10 years of experience in global health and development and has received Johnson & Johnson Leadership Award in 2014 and 2015. She started her career as Communications & Public Relations specialist at Johnson & Johnson Consumer China in 2003, responsible for crisis management, product launch, and media relations.
