James Mwanza, MSc. is a Senior Programs officer with Vital Strategies under the Bloomberg Data for Health Initiative, based in New York, USA. The Data for Health Initiative is a multi-year program to improve Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in 20 countries and municipalities in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Pacific. James’ role is to manage implementation, of country work plans, and other core public health functions mainly to Tanzania, and Rwanda, among other countries. Previously, he served as the Country Representative of the Swiss Red Cross in South Sudan where he focused on the development of healthcare system in fragile contexts. Other previous assignments include work with Malteser International and African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF), where he developed community-based healthcare training programs and set up of clinical research field laboratories in various parts of East Africa. James has more than 15 years of experience in project cycle management, strategic planning, and health system strengthening. He holds a Master Degree in Public Health and Health Promotion from the Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Health Education and Promotion.
