Afiya McLaughlin-Johnson was most recently Judicial Law Clerk for District of Columbia Office of Administrative Hearings. From 2012-2019, she worked at the State Department within the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations as Afghanistan Adviser (Programs Officer and Gender Adviser to the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues) and contractor.

Previously, Afiya worked for USAID Office of Development Partners. While at USAID, she published an article for Global Development Alliance Quarterly Newsletter entitled “Opportunity Window: Partnerships with the Extractive Industry: Lessons Learned.”  She also worked for United Methodist Committee on Relief as program officer for the Africa and Caribbean unit, consulted for the United Nations Development Programme, and taught elementary school. 

Afiya earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center and a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Spelman College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, minoring in International Relations.
