Dr. Jordan Guthrie is Counsellor (Economic) at the Embassy of Canada to the United States in Washington, DC, where he also serves as the head of development cooperation for Canada’s U.S. mission network. Prior to taking up this assignment in July 2021, Jordan worked throughout the COVID-19 pandemic at the Privy Council Office of Canada in the Office of the Deputy Minister for COVID-19 Response, working primarily on the economic response. Previously, he served for four years as Deputy Director of International Economic Strategy at Global Affairs Canada, among other roles in Ottawa. Jordan was recruited to the federal public service in 2014 as he was completing his PhD in political economy at the University of Toronto. During his doctoral work, he conducted extensive fieldwork in East Africa and was Resident Researcher and Visiting Scholar at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, as well as a Beattie Doctoral Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and a Fellow at Massey College, both at the University of Toronto. He also holds a Master’s degree in political science from Dalhousie University and an Honours Bachelor’s degree in political science and history from McGill University.
